Product Ads on Social Media

The right sizes, the visual hook, and where to place text — to design an ad that stops the scroll.

A store photo is not an ad photo

A store photo's job is clarity: a clean background, an isolated product, clear details. An ad's job is to stop the thumb from scrolling in under two seconds. That's why an ad needs visual context (usage, comparison, result) and deliberate empty space for text, while a store photo needs complete neutrality.

Confusing the two is the most common mistake: an ad with a completely white background looks like a catalog photo and gets scrolled past without notice, and a store photo cluttered with effects confuses the buyer and hides the product.

Sizes for every platform

DestinationRatioSuggested size
Story, Reels, TikTok, and Snapchat9:161080 × 1920
Vertical Instagram post4:51080 × 1350
Square post (Facebook/Instagram)1:11080 × 1080
Store product photo1:11600 × 1600
Horizontal cover and display ads16:91920 × 1080

The practical rule: generate the design in the vertical ratio first because it's the hardest, then derive the square and horizontal versions from it, adjusting text position — not the other way around.

Build the visual hook in the first two seconds

The hook is the element that makes the thumb stop. Four patterns consistently work with products:

  • Before/after: shows the result directly and suits skincare, cleaning, and beauty products.
  • Extreme close-up: texture, a droplet, a sparkle — one magnified detail sparks curiosity.
  • The product in a hand or in use: clarifies scale and makes the scene feel human.
  • Sharp color contrast: a light product on a dark background or vice versa, making it stand out in a busy feed.

Where do text and price go?

  • Leave the top and bottom thirds nearly empty: platform interfaces cover them with buttons.
  • Place the main sentence in the upper-middle third, at a size readable on a phone screen without zooming.
  • Keep the price or offer in one fixed corner across all your ads — consistency builds recognition.
  • Use a semi-transparent background behind the text if the image is busy, not a heavy shadow.
  • Don't repeat the text already in the post's caption inside the image.

Generate variants, not a single version

A successful ad is discovered through testing, not guessing. Generate three variants that differ in a single element only — the background, the hook, or the text position — and run them with an equal budget for a few days before judging. This is much faster than arguing over taste within the team.

Keep the winning variant as a baseline, then test a new variant against it every two weeks to resist ad fatigue (a drop in performance after repeated exposure to the same audience).

Pre-launch checklist

  • Is the text readable on a small phone screen and in low-brightness mode?
  • Is the product clear at first glance without explanation?
  • Do important elements appear under platform buttons or outside the safe frame?
  • Does the color match the real product?
  • Does the promise in the ad match what's on the product page?
  • Were all required sizes exported from the same design?

Frequently asked questions

What's the best size for a product ad on Instagram?

The 1:1 square or the 4:5 vertical for feed posts, and 9:16 for Stories and Reels. Start with vertical since it occupies more of the screen.

Should I use the same store photo in my ad?

It's not recommended. A store photo is designed for clarity on a clean background, while an ad needs context, a visual hook, and space for text.

How much text should I put inside the image?

One short sentence carrying the main benefit, plus a number or offer if there is one. Too much text inside the image reduces clarity on a phone.
